Hamburg hosts the exhibition “Chronicles of the Unknown Superheroes/Ukrainians”!

On February 23, to mark the second anniversary of russia’s invasion of Ukraine, our photo story was presented in one of the largest cities in Germany, Hamburg!

This project aims to tell about the work of the B50 community and showcase our work to eliminate the consequences of the invasion. Almost 2 years after the liberation of the Kyiv region from the invaders, local communities have not yet recovered from all the destruction that the russian army has brought. Destroyed houses and shell holes are a common sight in the villages and towns that russia has passed through. One of the tasks of our community is to clean up the remains of houses destroyed by shelling.

The international photo exhibition “Сhronicles of the Unknown Superheroes Ukrainians“, held in Hamburg in the open air, is a collaboration between the B50 community, the Hamburg logistics center Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus-Aktiengesellschaft (HHLA) and the St. Nicholas Memorial (Mahnmal St. Nikolai). 

The photo exhibition will be on display until the end of June near the former church, which was itself destroyed during World War II and is now a Memorial to the consequences of war and destruction. The photographs of modern-day bombed-out houses in Ukraine, of people fleeing and suffering, are depressingly similar to those seen in this memorial.

On behalf of B50, the exhibition was presented by active community volunteers Svitlana Rudokvas and Yuliia Horbasenko, who came to Hamburg on a special trip at the invitation of the Memorial. They delivered welcoming speeches about the exhibition and shared their volunteer experiences. The exhibition was presented by Dr. Martin Vetter, Chairman of the Board of the St. Nicholas Memorial Society, and Angela Titzrath, Chairman of the Board of Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus-Aktiengesellschaft. Consul General of Ukraine in Hamburg Iryna Tybinka and Vice Mayor of Hamburg Katharina Fegebank also addressed the opening ceremony.

The exhibition was specially adapted and presented here on 12 large banners. To the photo story, which shows a chronicle of a typical volunteer day, we added banners with quotes from our volunteers, taken from their interviews, another B50 project. The banners feature excerpts from interviews with B50 representatives at the opening, Yuilia and Svitlana, as well as our coordinators, Oleksandr and Polina.

Yuliia and Svitlana gave ten-minute speeches in English about their experiences as volunteers during the war, the work of B50, and this exhibition. They also gave interviews to the press and conducted a small tour.

The exhibition is free to visit, located right in front of the Memorial, from February 23, 2024 to June 30, 2024. The address is Willy Brandt-Strasse 60.
