May 2024: old and new locations, collaborations, projects

In May, B50 volunteers from various projects managed to accomplish a lot. We will tell you what exactly.

The participants of the Clean Up! project actively helped in Moshchun. They worked at four locations here, and completed the work at two of them!

Meanwhile, B50 volunteers from the Reconstruction project began transforming two bomb shelters of children’s educational institutions in Kyiv region. These are the Druzhnia kindergarten of the combined type “Strumochok” of the Borodianka village council and the Mykulychi kindergarten “Yalynka” of the Nemishaieve village council. The volunteers will gradually hand over the renovated and ready-to-decorate premises to their colleagues from Shelters. This way, the work will go faster at both facilities.

This month, “Stronger than bricks” completed its all-Ukrainian journey, which began last May in Kyiv. This year, the first B50 photo exhibition visited 19 cities, was exhibited at 26 locations, introduced thousands of people to volunteerism in recovery and hopefully inspired many to join the volunteer movement. The last stop of the “Stronger than bricks” tour was Kherson.

Meanwhile, the photo exhibition “Chronicles of the Unknown Superheroes Ukrainians” was on display in Hamburg at the St. Nicholas Memorial (Mahnmal St. Nikolai). The exhibition will run until the end of June. So we welcome everyone to visit!

In May, B50, together with the non-profit organization British Homes and Schools for Ukraine (BHSU), launched a new project to help schools in Ukraine and strengthen their capacity – TOGETHER: Building Powerful School Partnerships. This project will enable Ukrainian schools to receive the support they need from British schools.

As part of the pilot project, we aim to connect five UK schools with five Ukrainian schools to provide support and build partnerships and intercultural and professional exchange. For the Ukrainian schools, TOGETHER will provide the necessary resources to help them cope with the day-to-day challenges of war and resume student learning.

In May, we also published two international media stories about the work of B50 volunteers on our website:

• The heroes of the article by the Japanese newspaper Asahi (Morning Sun) were activists from the Shelters project. On February 24, Asahi journalists visited the Zavorychi Gymnasium and caught our artists at work. Read the translated article here.
• Journalists from Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen (German Television’s Second Channel) filmed a story about B50 volunteers from the Clean Up! project. At the end of March this year, German media spent a day in Moshchun with B50 activists. Watch their story (with Ukrainian and English subtitles) on our Youtube channel.

This is how the B50 community members closed the spring volunteer season. Summer is ahead, and traditionally there is a lot of work to be done, so we will continue to work. Join us!
